JULIO CALLE SUAREZ
Fragment of an interview realized to the pintor by the writer Juan Felix Cortez and appeared in the newspaper “The Voice” (La Voz) from Trujillo city the 19th of november, 2001.
What means in your personal life the decision of be a plastic artist?
It means a constant challenge, a constant struggle, no only because it is difficult to develope oneself, live and create like an artist in our country and in our society, except because I embark to sail through my interior space, a so vast inclosure that sometimes to devour to us and so, we don`t result devour by the society except by ourselves.
It is for this, that sometimes I feel the painting as a joyful liberator art, but sometimes a tortuous and delirious flagellator.
What fundaments do you have to realize an artistic work and that it has truly a trascendental message?
My painting is very personal, I dare to say that I paint on myself, I mean that I am the theme, because I try to plasm the doubt and the contradiction, the fear, its unability, the stuttering, the balbucery when I try to give answers to big questions: why?, how?, when?, where?, where abouts?. How many things happen to each one, I mean, that to transform to the human being in society first we have to transform to the individual human being and it depends of the soul of each one.
Do you believe that a plastic artist is defined by a determinate tendency?
Nowadays the frontiers between the tendencies have made diffuse themselves, there is more freedom of search, people can transmit freely, to mix, to searcn and hybrid, etc.
Though the tendencies, perhaps define to many “Artists” that are adapted to the transitory fashions. I refer to be defined for myself, no with works except with the work in fact. Maybe the painters are some undefined because we are so confused and complicated.
Do you consider very important the cultural identification and very necessary the social funtion of the art?
The trust, I have not gotten to understand totally about the cultural identification, being so individualistic, perhaps I would prefer to speak my own personal identity.
It results difficult to me saying: “We are so, because...”; though we have livings until certain point look like with thousands and until millions of members according our social status; each one has his own mind, his varities, his ideas, his home_sicknesses, that give us an identitu nearly one`s own.
So I prefer this small personal Identity to our unshapen cultural identity because I believe that the unknown, the problem of the man, it is universal.
Refering to the social function of the art, in my case would be some like to have a bridge to communicate with the other, to tell them “It is what happens to me, so I see the things, I think so”, “Maybe you think or have lived some like this.”, and if from there borns a consensus. A take of conscience, would be magnificient, the work and the life transcend, can until get to improve our situation as society.
What characteristics exceed on your pictorical works and which are your propositions?
I could say that my work is expressive, the personages show themselves monstrous, but most of time home_sickness or frightenned. Home_sickness, because have lost the capacity to find the happiness in the simple things, nowadays everything is so complicated. So there is sarcasm and laugh but banterer of our stupidity, our incapacity, our pseudopower. I laugh about myself and through mine, of everything; because I want to know and I don`t.
My proposition: the happiness is not where we are looking for, though still I don´t know where it is, when I find I will inform you.
